The 5-House Rule — Why Less Is More When You’re House Hunting

When you start looking at homes, it’s exciting — every showing feels like a new possibility. But after seeing too many in one day, they all start to blur together. You forget which kitchen went with which backyard, and by the end of the day, every house starts to feel the same.
That’s exactly why I follow what I call the 5-House Rule — because after about five homes, it’s hard to remember the details clearly.

What Is the 5-House Rule?
The idea is simple: when it comes to house hunting, more isn’t always better. Seeing too many homes in one day can actually make the process harder, not easier. After five or so houses, something called decision fatigue kicks in. Your brain starts to mix things up — “Wait, was the big backyard with the blue kitchen or the beige one?” “Did the finished basement belong to this house or the one two stops ago?” Once that happens, it’s tough to keep details straight, and even tougher to make a confident decision.

Why Five Is the Magic Number
When I take buyers out to see homes, I recommend limiting each showing trip to five homes or fewer. It’s not about seeing everything — it’s about seeing the right things. This approach keeps your mind fresh, your impressions sharp, and your notes actually useful. You’ll have the time and mental energy to really explore each home — open closets, check layouts, and talk about what works for your lifestyle — without rushing or zoning out halfway through the day. You’ll remember what you loved, what you didn’t, and which homes deserve a second look.

Quality Over Quantity
It’s easy to think that seeing more homes gives you more options, but often, it just creates confusion. By keeping your showings focused, you make space for clear thinking and stronger choices. If a home doesn’t feel right, that’s okay — you can always schedule another round of showings later. The goal is clarity, not chaos. The 5-House Rule helps you slow down, stay intentional, and recognize “the one” when you walk through the door.

The Smart Search Mindset
House hunting should be exciting, not exhausting. When you focus on quality over quantity, you’ll make smarter, faster decisions — and you’ll actually enjoy the process. So the next time you’re planning a day of showings, remember: ✨ Five homes. Quality over quantity. That’s how confident buyers find the right home without the overwhelm.
